Booking Through Thursday - March 19

Today's prompt:

How about, “What’s the worst ‘best’ book you’ve ever read — the one everyone says is so great, but you can’t figure out why?”

There have been a few books that got a lot of hype that I didn't really like. One that comes to mind is Naked by David Sedaris. I guess I just didn't like him. It wasn't enjoyable for me to read at all. My friends have been recommending other books by him but I'm just politely refusing.

Wicked by Gregory Maguire is another one. I didn't care for the book at all. I thought it was too full of politics and frankly I didn't like Elphaba. She was a horrible person, especially with her treatment of her son. That being said, I've seen the musical and absolutely loved it. It's quite different from the book and in all good ways.

Hi!

After reading your post, I believe that you and I might have similar tastes in books. I listened to Naked on audio CD and it was read by the other which might have had something to do with me not liking it. I completely agree with your opinion of Wicked. I was unable to finish this novel. I kept waiting to find something likable about the Elphaba character, something that would allow me to feel some sort of attachment to this character. I have never been a fan of musical but maybe one day I will give the musical a try.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Hmm, I've been tempted to try some other books by Sedaris, but I've heard so many mixed reviews recently that I'm a bit put off now.

Elphaba was pretty horrible to her son, I agree, but loved the book. There's the musical version of the book out too, if you ever wanted to pick that one up. I heard that the ending is different, but sadly, I haven't seen the musical yet.

I haven't read Wicked, but I couldn't get through his Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister. Ugh! I understand that most people like the musical though and I have yet to see it. This has been such a great BTT. What one person loves, another hates.
